art without sight

We have found that the kids get really involved with the group discussion portion of our projects. They are able to share, ask questions, generate ideas and get their creative juices flowing so to speak. This week our project involved creating art that could be experienced by someone without vision. Basically, it is “Touchable Art”, art with different textures and shapes that can be felt.

The kids asked a lot of questions and answered each other as they thought about what it would be like to experience art with out vision. I believe it helps them to connect with the piece they are working on in a more personal and individual way. One child for instance during group discussion instinctively reached for the Touchable Art example and closed her eyes to "see" the art with her fingers. Touchable art is a chance to explore and realize how tactile we really are.
